Connecting to MoatDrop

Last updated October 12, 2026

MoatDrop is a remote Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. Connect it to Claude, ChatGPT or any MCP client and ask questions of the documents attached to your secure links. The document stays in MoatDrop; your assistant receives only the answer to each question.

Server URL: https://api.moatdrop.com/mcp (Streamable HTTP).

What the connector does

  • Ask Document: ask a question in plain language and get an answer extracted from one shared document. Extract Fields: get values from the document as JSON matching a schema you supply. Both are metered the same way, and both return their result wrapped as document content so your assistant treats it as data, not as instructions.
  • Manage links: Create Link, List Links, Get Link, Update Link, Enable Link, Disable Link, Delete Link.
  • See usage: Get Link Analytics, Get Analytics Summary, Get Account Info (your plan and this month's usage).

Setup

Claude Desktop, Cursor and other clients (API key)

Create an API key at Account, then API keys and send it as a bearer header. For clients that accept a url plus headers config:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "moatdrop": {
      "url": "https://api.moatdrop.com/mcp",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer mdp_your_key_here" }
    }
  }
}

If your client only speaks stdio, bridge it with the mcp-remote npm package (needs Node.js 18 or newer):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "moatdrop": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y", "mcp-remote", "https://api.moatdrop.com/mcp",
        "--transport", "http-only",
        "--header", "Authorization:Bearer mdp_your_key_here"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Claude.ai or ChatGPT (custom connector)

Sign-in for Claude.ai and ChatGPT custom connectors is not enabled yet. Use an API key with a client that supports bearer headers, as above.

Authentication

  • mdp_ API keys act as your account. Keep them secret; you can revoke a key at any time from the API keys page.
  • mds_ document access tokens are created by a link owner in the link's share panel and work only for Ask Document and Extract Fields on that link. The owner can set an expiry or a query limit, and can revoke a token instantly. Treat a token like a password.

Limits

  • Questions are limited to 4,000 characters.
  • Questions are charged to the owner of the link, not to whoever asks. During the free research preview every account includes 200 questions a month and each question counts as one, whatever the document size. If you need more, ask us and we raise it by hand.
  • Accounts may have up to 20 active links.
  • A link owner can cap the questions a link or a token will answer, set an expiry, or disable the link. An owner can also restrict a link by IP address.
  • Questions run with a small per-account concurrency cap. If you hit a limit the tool returns a clear error rather than a partial answer.

Privacy and data handling

Answers are never stored. Questions are not stored unless the link owner has turned on the question log for that link. Answers are scrubbed of personal information by default; on the Pro plan a link owner can turn scrubbing off per link. Every access to a link is logged for its owner. See the Privacy Policy for what is collected and for how long, and the Terms of Service for the rules of use.

Troubleshooting

  • "Invalid share token: token is unknown, revoked, expired, exhausted, or doesn't belong to this link": check the token starts with mds_ and was copied in full. If it was, the owner has revoked it, it has expired, or it hit its query limit: ask the owner for a new one.
  • "This link no longer exists": the owner deleted the link.
